LEAVENWORTH – Benedictine Cross Country got its season started on Friday night, with the Sunset Showdown hosted by the University of St. Mary.
Both the Raven Men and Raven Women earned second in their respective events, in fields against KCAC, GPAC and Heart programs.
The Raven Women completed the 5K course in an average time of 19:54, scoring 34 points – just one point behind event winner USM.
The Raven Men complete the 8K course in a an average time of 26:35, scoring 40 points.
The Raven Women finished with four inside the top 10 individual finishers.
Helen Ullrich paced the Ravens with a second-place finish, ahead of teammate Sophia Thome in third. Leah Haeusser took eighth, followed by Evelyn Kuhn in ninth. The remaining scoring athletes, finished between 15th and 21st. Abigail Meyer (15th), was followed by Josie Jansen (18th) and Ave Wolf (21st).
The Raven Men had two finish in the top five with a total of 5 inside the top 20.
Joshua Melendez and Brendan Alfonso went 1-2 for the Ravens finishing in second and third place. John Joyce was next to finish for the Ravens in 12th with Dominic Buschelman (17th) and George Holleman (19th) round out the athletes inside the top 20. Owen Nolte (27th) and Kaleb Arnold (28th) rounded out the Ravens scoring in the race.

Both teams return to competition on Sept. 19 as they will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to compete in the Viking Invitational hosted by Grand View University.
