William Biggs

Dr. Will Biggs joined the athletic bands staff as the Assistant Director in January 2025, bringing more than two decades of experience as a music educator, director, and administrator to the program.

Prior to his arrival, Dr. Biggs spent over twenty years directing elite band programs and serving in educational leadership roles across Kansas. His career includes roles as the Director of Bands for the Chase County School District and the Director of Bands and Director of Fine Arts for the Gardner Edgerton School District. He also gained valuable experience at the university level as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) at both Emporia State University and the University of Kansas.

Throughout his career, Dr. Biggs’s programs have been defined by a commitment to excellence. Between 2004 and 2024, his ensembles earned an incredible 21 first-division ratings at the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) Large Group Contest. His dedication to teaching was recognized in 2015 when he was named the USD 231 Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Biggs is also a highly respected leader in the regional music education community, holding numerous executive board positions for the East Central Kansas Music Educators Association (ECKMEA) and Northeast KMEA. His leadership roles include ECKMEA District President: 2023–2024 (President-Elect: 2021–2022; Past-President: 2025–2026); ECKMEA Band Chairperson: 2018–2020, and NEKMEA Band Chairperson: 2016–2017

Dr. Biggs holds an extensive academic portfolio spanning music education and institutional leadership. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Kansas, Master of Music from Emporia State University, Master of Educational Leadership from Pittsburg State University, Education Specialist (EdS) in School District Leadership, and a PhD in Music Education from the University of Kansas.

As a musician and educator, Dr. Biggs believes strongly in his philosophy of forming young adults into outstanding members of our community through music.

Dr. Biggs and his wife, Annie, a freelance pianist who works in the finance department at KU, were married in 2002. They have two sons- Gabe (19), who attends KU and is studying Film and Media and plays trombone in the KU Marching Jayhawks, and Eli (14), who loves playing the saxophone and participating in Boy Scouts. As a family, they enjoy traveling in their travel trailer and have camped in 10 different states.
