MARSHALL, Mo. – After being delayed from playing their match on Saturday night because of severe weather, the No. 14 Raven men's soccer team finally took the field on Monday night against No. 12 Missouri Valley College.
Benedictine (9-2-2, 3-1-0 HAAC) struck first but then Missouri Valley (8-3-1, 3-1-0 HAAC) scored three unanswered goals to earn a 3-1 win in the battle of top 15 NAIA programs.
Back Fernando Galvan (Sr., Kansas City, Mo.) continued his to add to Benedictine's offensive threat in the loss. Galvan scored Benedictine's lone goal during the 21st minute off an assist from midfielder Jade Mesias (Jr., Auckland City, New Zealand).
Galvan now has eight goals on the season with six of those coming in Benedictine's last four matches.
Valley scored during the 35th minute to tie the match and then took a 2-1 lead into the half, scoring in the final seconds of the first half.
They went on to add their final goal during the 83rd minute to had Benedictine its first loss in HAAC play.
Three teams sit tied atop the HAAC standings headed into the final two weeks of the HAAC regular season.
Benedictine and Valley are each 3-1 while Baker University – Benedictine's next opponent – is also 3-1. MNU and Graceland are a half-game back in the standings at 2-1-1 putting five of the six seeds up for grabs in the HAAC Postseason Tournament.
The HAAC only gets one automatic qualifier into the NAIA National Championship Tournament – the postseason tournament champion.
The latest edition of the NAIA Men's Top 25 Coaches Poll will be released on Tuesday afternoon.
Benedictine hosts Baker at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night in the feature contest of the 2012 Homecoming Weekend.
