Women's Soccer Comes Up Short in HAAC Tournament Title Match

LAMONI, Iowa – The second-seeded Raven women's soccer team hit the road on Friday night to take on top-seeded Graceland University in the 2012 Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Tournament Championship.

Graceland (16-2-1) struck early and added a second goal late in the first half before holding on against a barrage of Benedictine (15-2-3) shots in the second half to beat the Ravens 2-0.

Benedictine outshot Graceland 28-10, which included a 17-3 advantage in the second half.

Despite the large margin in shots, Benedictine couldn't push a shot past HAAC Player of the Year, Graceland keeper Stefany Castano Cardoza.

Cardoza turned away 16 shots on goal to earn the shutout and give Graceland the HAAC's automatic berth in the NAIA National Championship Tournament.

Forward Bethany Smith (Soph., Overland Park) led the Ravens with eight shots and five shots on goal. Forward Liz Enna (Fr., Overland Park) was close behind with six shots and three on goal.

Raven keeper Ashley Holland (Jr., Omaha) finished with four saves while giving up two goals in 90 minutes in goal.

The Ravens, the No. 17 team in the NAIA, now play the waiting game as they will be looking at how the remainder of the NAIA's conference tournaments play out.

The 2012 NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches' Final Top 25 Poll will be released Sunday at 3 p.m. CST, following the completion of the conference/independent/unaffiliated group tournaments. The release of the final NAIA Women's Soccer Modified Ratings Percentage Index (MRPI) and 32-team national championship field will be announced Sunday at 5 p.m. CST with the official bracket released Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. CST.
