It took a streaking 3-point shooting second half by Culver-Stockton College on Thursday night to force overtime with Raven men's basketball team inside the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.
In the end, Culver-Stockton (13-3, 4-0 HAAC) outscored Benedictine (9-5; 1-2 HAAC) 11-7 in overtime to earn a 85-81 win.
Culver-Stockton entered the game No. 2 in NAIA Div. I in 3-pointers per game at 10.8 but didn't get hot from beyond the arc until late in the
second half.
The Wildcats made seven of their 11 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes of regulation and the overtime.
Benedictine limited Culver-Stockton just three 3-pointers in the first half.
Despite only making one 3-pointer of their own, the Ravens converted 14 first-half field goals to take a two-point lead into the halftime break.
The first half went back and forth with five ties and five lead changes with Culver-Stockton leading by as much as six points before Benedictine battled back.
In the second half, after two more ties and a brief two-point lead by Culver-Stockton, 35-32, Benedictine used a 19-6 lead to build a 11-point lead over Culver-Stockton.
While Culver-Stockton was finally able to find their stroke from beyond the arc, it wasn't enough to pull away from Benedictine.
The Wildcats went on a 11-1 run to erase the Wildcats double-digit lead but could never pull away from Benedictine.
The lead changed hands five times and the game was tied six times over the final five minutes of regulation as the teams went into overtime tied at 74 points.
Benedictine converted two field goals in overtime, the last of which gave the Ravens a brief 81-79 lead when guard Brett Fisher (Soph., Overland Park hit a 3-pointer with just over one-minute remaining.
Culver-Stockton's Marshawn Norris answered on the ensuing possession and then Alen Hadzimahovic converted two last-second free throws to ice the game for the Wildcats.
Benedictine's 81 points established a new season-high point total but the 85 points allowed also established a new season-high for points allowed by the Ravens.
Benedictine forward Charlie Wallrapp (Jr., Omaha) and Culver-Stockton guard Austin Keaton finished with a game-high 23 points.
In addition to Wallrapp, three other Ravens finished in double figures.
Guard John Harris, Jr. (Fr., Lincoln, Neb.) scored a career high 21 points while forward TJ Stevens (Sr., Overland Park) added 12. Guard Shawn Fleming, Jr., (Fr., Dayton, Ohio) anchored the Ravens bench with 11 points to round out the top scorers for Benedictine.
The Ravens hit the road on Saturday for a 4 p.m. showdown in Olathe against NAIA Div. I No. 13 MNU inside the Cook Center on the MNU campus.
MNU earned a 75-63 win on the road Thursday night at Avila University.
