The Raven softball team had a busy weekend with four games in two cities as they traveled to Marshall, Mo., on Saturday to take on Missouri Valley College before returning home on Sunday to take on Central Methodist University.
On the road against Valley, the two teams needed extra innings to decide both contests as Benedictine (15-13, 2-4 HAAC) split with Valley dropping game one 4-3 and then winning game two 2-0.
On Sunday, the Ravens were welcomed home by HAAC front-runner CMU as the Eagles – who are also receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll – handed Benedictine a sweep, winning 11-3 and 5-0.
In the loss to Valley, Mallory Goulding (Fr., Plainfield, Ill) and Annie Turbyfill (Fr., Chillicothe, Mo.) combined to pitch for Benedictine. Goulding earned the start and went four innings before Turbyfill threw the final three and two-thirds innings to suffer the loss.
Benedictine recorded three extra base hits in the loss. Right fielder Kellie Bachkora (Fr., Lee's Summit, Mo.) and second baseman Katie Rickleffs (Fr., Topeka) finished with a double while catcher Melani Braun (Fr., Columbus, Neb.) added a triple.
In the win over Valley, Katelyn Nill (Jr., Lenexa) and Rickleffs combined to pitch for Benedictine.
Nill got the start and threw the first six innings, holding Valley scoreless off six hits before Rickleffs finished off the final two innings to earn the win as Benedictine scored twice in the top of the eighth.
Shortstop Megan Eldridge (Soph., Arvada, Mo.) and left fielder Allison McCormick (Jr., Pittsburg) drove in the Ravens runs in the eighth to give Benedictine the split.
On Sunday in game one against CMU, Goulding and Turbyfill combined in the loss.
Benedictine mounted a late-inning rally scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth but couldn't avoid the run-rule loss.
Designated player Jenna Fitzpatrick (Jr., Murrieta, Calif.) went 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored by Ashley Dobbie (Sr., Overland Park) added a home run and three RBIs.
In the weekend's finale, Nill Turbyfill and Rickleffs combined in the loss while the Ravens were limited to just four hits in the shutout.
Center fielder Briana Rombach (Jr., Washington, Mo.), Fitzpatrick, Eldridge and McCormick recorded Benedictine's four hits in the loss.
The Ravens are scheduled to travel to Lamoni, Iowa on Wednesday to face off against Graceland University in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
