Women's Basketball rebounds with 61-59 win over Saint Gregory's

The Raven Women's basketball team returned home on Friday night for the first of four non-con games as they took on Saint Gregory's University in the second game of the 2014 AmericInn-BC Classic.

Benedictine (1-1) held off a last-second push by Saint Gregory's (1-1) to earn a 61-59 win and start off their home schedule with a win.

With just over two minutes left in the game, the Ravens trailed the Cavaliers 55-53.

A 3-pointer by Jordan Closter and a bucket in the paint off a Saint Gregory's turnover by Kristen Murphy pushed the Ravens ahead 58-55 inside the final two minutes of the game.

Saint Gregory's responded with a 3-pointer of their own to tie it at 58 but another basket in the paint, this time by Jackie Ziesel, followed by a free throw from Murphy gave the Ravens the lead for good as the Cavaliers went scoreless from the floor over the final 30 seconds.

After playing through four ties and three lead changes, the Ravens closed out the final three minutes of the first half on a 10-0 run to pull ahead by eight points at the half.

Benedictine pushed their halftime lead to as much as 10 points before Saint Gregory's pulled within a point five minutes in the second half.

After the fifth tie of the game three more lead changes, the Ravens trailed by five points with six minutes remaining before finishing out the game outscoring the Cavaliers, 14-7, over the final six minutes.

Chayla Rutledge lead the Ravens with a game-high 16 points while Closter finished with 13 points off the Raven bench. Benedictine finished with a 27-9 advantage in bench points while also outscoring Saint Gregory's 26-16 in the paint.

Benedictine wraps up the Classic at 3 p.m. Saturday with a game against Wayland Baptist University. Wayland Baptist dropped game one of the Classic to MNU, 94-79. MNU takes on Saint Gregory's at 1 p.m.
