Baseball opens Heart play with sweep over Culver-Stockton

The Raven Baseball team returned to Laughlin Field at Olsen Stadium on Saturday to open up Heart of America Athletic Conference play against Culver-Stockton College.

Benedictine (5-14, 2-0 Heart) used a three-run fifth inning in game one and got a walk-off single in game two to pick up a sweep over Culver (4-15, 0-2 Heart) with a pair of 5-4 wins.

In the opener, Eli Egger got the start on the hill for the Ravens. He threw his second complete game of the season and earned his first win as he went seven innings allowing four runs off six hits with four strikeouts.

At the plate Chris Johnson anchored the Ravens as he went 3 for 3. Logan Elliott recorded the only extra base hit of the game with a triple and RBI.

In game two, Adam Burns earned the start and threw another complete-game effort for the Ravens to improve to 3-1 on the season. He scattered 12 hits over nine hits with four strikeouts.

Three Ravens picked up extra base hits at the plate. Jacob Kirmer, Christian Patterson and Johnson all recorded doubles with Kirmer and Johnson each picking up two hits. Johnson finished with two RBIs, the final of which came on a walk-off single to end the game in the bottom of the ninth.

The Ravens close out the home stand on Sunday with a 1 p.m., nine-inning game against No. 14 Bellevue (Neb.) University.
