MNU holds off Baseball for series-opening sweep

The Raven Baseball team opend their final homestand of the 2015 season on Friday with a doubleheader against the MNU Pioneers.

Benedictine (13-30, 10-14 Heart) rallied late in both games but it wasn't enough as MNU (29-18, 15-9 Heart) earned a sweep over the Ravens, 7-4 and 6-3.

In game one, the Pioneers did all their damage offensively off starting pitcher Eli Egger. Egger gave up six earned runs off seven hits over two and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts to suffer the loss.

Casey Splane entered in relief of Egger and pitched the final four and one-third innings, holding the Pioneers scoreless while scattering four hits.

Splane's effort on the hill gave the Ravens a chance to rally offensively.

Benedictine scored four unanswered over the final two innings of the game but couldn't keep the rally going in the seventh inning.

Jacob Leathers went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs while Chris Johnson added a two-run home run in the seventh.

In game two, Adam Burns earned the start on the hill for the Ravens. He went all seven innings for the Ravens, scattering six runs off nine hits to suffer the loss.

Trailing 1-0 early, the Ravens rallied to pull even after three innings before the Pioneers scored two in the fourth and three more in the fifth to extend their lead.

Benedictine rallied again with a two-run second inning but couldn't complete the comeback as they suffered the sweep.

Brenden Watamaniuk went 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs and a stolen base as he set the table for the Ravens offense.

Paul Heit recorded an RBI double to tie the game in the third with the Ravens two-runs in the sixth scoring off a throwing error by MNU catcher Brandon Marrero.

The two teams conclude the four-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday back on Laughlin Field at Olsen Stadium.
