Softball takes Heart Championship Series opener over Evangel

OVERLAND PARK – The fifth-seeded Raven Softball team took full advantage of three errors by fourth-seeded Evangel University on Thursday in the opening round of the 2015 Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship Series.

Benedictine (25-15) advanced to the championship bracket semifinals with a 6-4 win over Evangel (22-14) to avenge a regular-season sweep at the hands of the Crusaders.

The Ravens will take on top-seeded Central Methodist University at 11 a.m. Friday back at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex.

Thursday, Annie Turbyfill earned the start inside the circle for the Ravens and threw the first four innings. She gave up two earned runs off four hits before giving way to Katie Ricklefs. Ricklefs finished off the final three innings of play, giving up two runs off two hits to earn the win as the Ravens plated home the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh.

At the plate, Benedictine scored its six runs off five hits as Michaela Tolliver surrendered just two earned runs for the Crusaders.

Sierra Esau recorded the Ravens only multi-hit game at the plate, going 2 for 3. She finished with three runs scored and four stolen bases in the win.

Kellie Bachkora added two RBIs while Megan Eldredge, Chris Flucke and Anna Mach accounted for an RBI each.
