PHOENIX – Menlo (Calif.) College converted three free throws with three seconds left in the game on Monday morning to earn a 81-80 win over the Raven Men's Basketball team in the Cactus Classic.
The free throws by Menlo's Colton Wirth erased a late one-point lead by Benedictine (8-4) to give Menlo (12-2) the one-point win.
Despite connecting on a season high 58.8 percent from the floor, the Ravens couldn't overcome the second-half comeback by the Oaks.
The Ravens used a 68.2 percent shooting effort in the first half to build a 41-31 lead over the Oaks at halftime.
Benedictine's lead was erased by Menlo inside the first seven minutes of the second half as the Oaks tied the game up at 51-all with 13:33 left to play.
From that point, the game played through eight more ties with the lead changing hands 10 times with the last lead change coming on the final free throw from Wirth with three seconds left in the game.
The Ravens did get a last-second shot off, but the 3-point attempt from Jaiden Bristol didn't fall giving the Oaks the one-point win over the Ravens.
Benedictine finished with four players in double figures, led by the 16 points of Colby Nickels. Nickels hit 6 of 8 from the floor with a 3-pointer and two free throws in just over 26 minutes of play. Kevin Motoyer added 15 points while Reshardd Harris and Adam Kutney chipped in with 10 each.
The Ravens won the battle of the board 30-26 with six offensive rebounds that led to a 10 second-chance points. The Ravens also finished the game with a slight edge in points in paint, 44-42.
Menlo connected on 14 of 17 free throws in the second half while Benedictine went 6 of 8 to finish the game with a 75-percent effort at the charity stripe.
The Ravens return to action in the Cactus Classic on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. (10:30 MST) against Rocky Mountain College. The Battlin' Bears lost their first match up in the Cactus Classic on Sunday, 81-78 to Menlo.
