Baseball falls in Heart Championship opener to MNU

OZARK, Mo. – MNU starting pitcher Matt Terrones threw a no-hitter through three and one-third innings on Friday night to silence the Raven Baseball team in their first game of the 2017 Heart Baseball Championship.

Benedictine (33-21) was able to get to Terrones, but MNU (31-18) proved to be too much for the Ravens as the Pioneers earned a 10-2 win.

Michael Kruse earned the start and handled the Pioneers through two innings before MNU broke through with a six-run third inning. Kruse was saddled with the loss, giving up five runs off four hits over his two innings. Benedictine finished the game using a total of five pitchers while Terrones pitched seven and one-third to earn the win.

Offensively, Benedictine was limited to five hits. They broke through against MNU in the fourth inning but were only able to scratch across two runs as Rocky DeSantis scored on a wild pitch while Logan Finley added the second run on a double steal.

Collectively, the Raven bullpen limited the Pioneers to four runs over the final six innings of play but offensively, the Ravens just couldn't break through as they stranded eight runners on the night.

Benedictine added their final run of the game in the top of the ninth when Matthew Jarecki singled in Austin Watamaniuk.

DeSantis was credited with the Ravens only extra base hit, a double in the fourth to break up the no-hit effort by Terrones.

The Ravens take on Avila University 1 p.m. today in the second elimination game in the Consolation Bracket back at US Baseball Park. A loss ends the Ravens season while a win advances them to play on Sunday at 10 a.m. against the loser of the Clarke-Grand View game at 4 p.m. today.
