The Raven Volleyball team picked up its second-straight sweep on Thursday, beating Friends University 26-24, 25-17 and 25-21 inside the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.
The first set was a tight battle from start to finish. The Ravens found themselves down 22-20 late in the set and Friends even had a chance to win the set leading 24-22. However, Benedictine battled back to score four-straight points, winning the set on a tip by Fleur Wesselink.
Makenna Ketter and Sara Rahmanzai led the way in the opening set with five kills, each. Three of Rahmanzai's kills fell in the deep corner on the Falcons side as she found a soft spot in the Friends defense.
The Ravens took a strong lead early in the second set, going up 10-4, but the Falcons battled back to tie the set 12-12. From that point on, though, Benedictine controlled the set, going on a 13-5 run to win 25-17. The final three points came on the serve of Murphy O'Malley, who recorded three aces in the set. Rahmanzai had four more kills in the set, Ketter had three more kills and Wesselink added three kills.
Benedictine nearly ran away with things early in the third set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead, but once again Friends closed the gap. The set was squared away at 16-16, then the teams traded points to get to 18-18 before the Ravens grabbed final control.
A 7-3 run in favor of the Ravens gave Benedictine the 3-0 sweep on the night. Rahmanzai and Ketter tied for the team lead with 11 kills and Wesselink had nine. Paxton Throne recorded 38 assists. Abby Brown had 16 digs and Wesselink added 10. O'Malley finished the night with four aces while Wesselink, Taylor Shroll and Brown all recorded an ace. Rahmanzai and Elizabeth Norbert had solo blocks on defense and the team recorded 10 block assists.
The win in the final non-conference match of the season improves Benedictine to 15-9. The Ravens return to Heart of America action at home on Tuesday, Oct. 16 against Evangel.
