Volleyball closes out regular season with sweep over Missouri Valley

Ravens Volleyball came out with a purpose Friday night in the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium. Benedictine swept the Missouri Valley Vikings 25-14, 25-23 and 27-25 on Senior Night.

The Ravens and Vikings were tied early in the first set, 5-5, then the Ravens carved out a small lead at 10-8. That's when Benedictine kicked things up a notch and outscored Missouri Valley 15-6 the rest of the set for the win. The Ravens had a .333 hit percentage in the first set.

That percentage got even better in the second set. Benedictine and Missouri Valley battled back and forth through the entire set, with the Ravens taking a time out when the score leveled 22-22. Benedictine closed out the set for the win, thanks in large part to a .536 hit percentage.

The Ravens carried the momentum of two-straight wins into the third set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead and forcing a Vikings timeout. Missouri Valley slowly chipped away at Benedictine's lead and tied the score 21-21. The Vikings grabbed a 25-24 lead, but with the set hanging in the balance, Benedictine's Fleur Wesselink recorded a kill to level things at 25-25.

The next kill belonged to Elizabeth Nobert, who continued her big night with a point that put the Ravens up 26-25. The match-winning point came on a Vikings hit that sailed out of bounds.

Several Ravens contributed to the attack as the team finished with a .344 hit percentage. Nobert led the way with 12 kills – and a .706 hit percentage – and added two block assists. Sydney Wiedenmann added 11 kills and three block assists, while Wesselink had nine kills and eight digs.

Paxton Throne had 39 assists in the match to go along with six digs and two kills. Abby Brown had a team-high 12 digs. Sara Rahmanzai recorded five kills and three block assists, and Makenna Ketter had seven kills.

The Ravens earned the No. 2 seed in the South Division for the Heart of America Postseason Tournament. Benedictine will play at home Saturday, Nov. 3 against Peru State College, the No. 3 seed from the Heart North.
