It took No. 8-ranked Benedictine 93 seconds to strike as the Raven Women's Soccer team advanced to the Second Round of the 35th annual NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship on Saturday night.
Benedictine (19-1-2) secured a return trip to Orange Beach, Ala., with a 3-0 win over Ottawa University (15-5-1) as they won their fifth straight NAIA Opening Round match.
After Emily Ambuul drew a foul on the attack for Benedictine, the ensuing free kick led to the first goal for the Ravens. Olivia Meyers took the free kick that was deflected by Molly Schmidt to the feet of Anna Romano who blasted a shot past Ottawa keeper Amanda Valentine during the second minute of play.
That strike wouldn't be the last for Romano. She sent her second goal past Valentine off a cross from Abbie Hair during the 20th minutes to push Benedictine in front 2-0.
Benedictine added their third goal during the 41st minute when Hair scored an unassisted goal that resulted from a failed clear attempt by Ottawa.
The Ravens finished the game with 20 shots – 10 during each half – while finishing with a 15-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Valentine registered 10 saves over 90 minutes in the loss while Benedictine keeper Ashley Rehagen finished with five saves to record her sixth shutout of the season while the win marked the program's 15th overall on the season.
Benedictine will now take on Embry Riddle (Ariz.) at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26 at the Orange Beach Sportsplex. Embry Riddle advanced to the second round with a 3-2 golden-goal win over Hope International (Calif.) on Saturday.
