A strong second half sent Men's Basketball past the (19) MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers 66-55 at home Tuesday night.
After a cold-shooting first half by each team, the Ravens and Pioneers came out firing in the second half. Adam Kutney scored 8-straight points for the Ravens and Jayden Temme hit a pair of 3-pointers as the Ravens took a 44-42 lead with 12:27 to play. Then back-to-back 3s by Wills Wallrapp and Eric Krus pushed the lead to 50-42.
The Ravens pushed their lead into double-digits and, other than a brief moment late in the half, held it in double-digits for the remainder of the game.
The first half saw the Pioneers lead for most of the action, leading by as many as 9 points at one point. The Ravens went on an 8-0 run to pull them back into the game, thanks to buckets by Kutney and Colby Nickels. A 3-pointer by Temme on an assist by Jaiden Bristol put the Ravens in front 26-25, but the Pioneers were able to push back in front to take a 27-26 lead at halftime.
The first-half scoring pace was slower than both teams are used to, as the Ravens entered the contest averaging 75.6 points per game and the Pioneers scored 78.5 points per game. The Ravens shot 31.3 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes and the Pioneers were just 28.1 percent from the field.
Both teams picked up the pace in the second half. The Ravens connected on 50 percent of their shots in the second half, including making 9-of-16 3-pointers, and finished with 40 percent shooting in the game. MNU upped its shooting percentage to 41 percent in the second half, but couldn't keep up with the Ravens hot shooting. The Pioneers were held 23.5 points below their season average.
Nickels and Kutney led the team with 13 points, each. Thomas O'Connor finished with 9 points and Bristol had 4 points and eight assists. The Ravens finished with 14 assists and nine turnovers.
