Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

(12) MNU holds off fourth-quarter run by (22) Women's Basketball

No. 22 Women's Basketball lost a battle of top-25 teams Tuesday night in the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium. The No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers topped the Ravens 70-63.

The Ravens trailed entering the fourth quarter, but an 11-2 run gave them a 56-53 lead with 5:28 to play in the game. The run was keyed by several players. Ali Brzozowski drove the baseline and hit a reverse layup to tie the contest 51-51 with 6:45 left in the game. Kayla Staley kept the momentum going for the Ravens, hitting a jumper to put the Ravens in front by a pair. Brzozowski made another bucket and Zeynep Canbaz hit a 3-pointer to give the Ravens the lead.

MNU took the lead back with a bucket at 3:40, but Sam Brennan was fouled on a drive to the basket. Brennan sank one to tie the game 59-59. The Pioneers took over from there, though, finishing the game on an 11-4 run.

The Ravens used a 6-2 scoring spurt late in the first half to take a 30-27 lead into halftime. Staley was the key to the offense in the first half, scoring 10 points and dishing out four assists. Skylar Washington had 8 points in the first half and Sam Brennan added 6 points.

A 15-3 Pioneers run put MNU up 42-35 in the third quarter. The Ravens closed the gap before the fourth quarter, though, trailing 49-45 going into the final frame.

One of the keys to the game was the Ravens ability to keep the Pioneers off the glass. The Pioneers averaged 14 more rebounds per contest than the Ravens entering Tuesday's game, but the Ravens pulled down 43 boards compared to 41 rebounds for MNU. Both teams had issues keeping possession of the ball as the Ravens and Pioneers each had 18 turnovers in the game.

Staley had a game-high 18 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Washington recorded 15 points and four rebounds.

The Ravens (4-3, 1-2 Heart) will return to action Monday, Nov. 26 when they travel to take on No. 11 Central Methodist University.
