HONOLULU – The Raven Women's Basketball team erased a 14-point third-quarter deficit on Tuesday holding John Brown University to just six points in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Benedictine (6-6) kept the momentum into the overtime period where they earned a 58-56 win over John Brown (7-4).
The Ravens outscored the Eagles 20-6 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. They connected on 43.8 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter while holding the Eagles to just 2 of 16. LaRanda Thomas scored six of her team-high 13 in the fourth quarter as she connected on a pair of 3-pointers to help spark the comeback effort.
Despite hitting two field goals in the first quarter, the Ravens found themselves down 12-8 after the first quarter. They outscored John Brown 13-12 in the second quarter to trail 24-21 at the half.
Anchored by four 3-pointers in the third quarter, John Brown increased their halftime lead to by 14 points with 10 minutes left to play.
Rachel Baumgartner got the comeback started for the Ravens in the fourth quarter as she scored four straight. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Thomas ans Skylar Washington pulled the Ravens within one point with 32 seconds left in the game. John Brown answered with a basket with 27 seconds left before Kayla Staley converted a layup as time expired to send the game into overtime.
The overtime played through six lead changes and two ties before Thomas was able to convert an old-fashion 3-point play with two seconds remaining to give the Ravens the win.
Baumgartner and Washington joined Thomas in double figures for the Ravens. Baumgartner finished with 12 points while Washington added 10 points off the bench.
The Ravens return to action today at Noon as they take on NAIA Div. II Rio Grande.
