Football picks up 11-point road win over Baker University

BALDWIN CITY – For the first time this season, the No. 16-ranked Raven Football team finished with two running backs rushing for over 100 yards.

The offensive effort for Benedictine (4-1) set the table for the upset over No. 11 Baker University (3-2) as the Ravens earned a 23-12 win over the Wildcats.

The win by the Ravens gave them their first road win over the Wildcats since 2005 while giving them their 2015.

Benedictine finished the game with 269 yards on the ground off 62 carries while defensively, they held Baker to just 50 yards off 35 carries. It was the second time this season an opponent had held the Wildcats to 50 yards or less while it was the third time this year the Ravens finished with over 250 yards on the ground.

The Ravens jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the Wildcats on rushing touchdowns of 30 yards and one yard from Charlie Nihart and Zach Renfro.

Baker answered before both team converted field goals in the second quarter to send the game into halftime with the Ravens in front 17-10.

Benedictine's final touchdown of the game came in the fourth quarter on a eight-yard rush by Marquis Stewart. The point after was blocked and returned by the Wildcats to cap off the scoring for the day.

The Ravens finisehd with 374 yards of total offense. Stewart finished with 162 yards off 37 carries while Nihart added 103 yards off 13 carries. Shaefer Schuetz added 105 yards off 13 of 20 passing while Aaron Jackson led the Raven recievers with 79 yards off six catches.

The Ravens recorded three sacks and 11 tackles for a loss of 39 yards on the day. Matt McCullough, Brett Shepardson, Tyler Thrasher and Tyler Shephard finished with seven tackles each. Shepardson, Jalen James, Terrell Johnson and Dante Edwards combined for the three sacks. Shepardson added two tackles for a loss while also recording a forced fumble.

Benedictine returns home this week to take on Central Methodist University in their final Heart cross-division game of the season. Saturday's kick off is at 2:30 p.m. as the Ravens-Eagles match up is the featured Heart Game of the Week on ESPN3.
