Volleyball opens Heart play with five-set win over Baker

BALDWIN CITY – After a three-match holiday weekend, the Raven Volleyball team opened Heart play on Tuesday with a trip to Baker University.

Benedictine (4-3, 1-0 Heart) took the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-23, before Baker (2-8, 0-1 Heart) rallied to win the next two sets for force a fifth set. The Ravens wrapped up the match with a commanding fifth-set win, 15-4, to start off conference play with a win.

The Ravens used their second-highest attacking percentage to earn the win over the Wildcats. They finished the match at .339 with a total of 49 kills as a team – also their second-highest five-set total. Fluer Wesselink hit .405 with a team-high 20 kills to lead the Ravens offensive attack. Sara Rahmanzai hit .409 while adding nine kills to round out the Ravens hitters.

Paxton Throne set up the attack, finishing with 39 of the Ravens 49 assists. She also added three kills, 11 digs and one block assist.

Abby Brown anchored the back line defense with 30 digs, one shy of her season high. As a team the Ravens finished with 101 digs, which set a new season high, with five players in double figures. Wesselink added 26 while Hailey Folkers and Hannah Thomazin added 13 to go along with the 11 of Throne.

At the net, the Ravens finished with 10 team blocks – two solo blocks and 16 block assists. Elizabeth Nobert finished with two solo blocks and two block assists while Rahmanzai added six block assists.

The Ravens return to Baldwin City on Friday and Saturday for four matches in the Baker Invitational. They take on Haskell and Ottawa on Friday before taking on No. 1 Park and Bethany on Saturday.
