Women's Soccer had its season ended Saturday in a 1-0, overtime loss to Grace (Ind) College in the Opening Round of the NAIA National Championship.
After 90 scoreless minutes, the Lancers JJ Aalbue put a shot on goal that deflected off a Ravens defender and past Olivia Berry for the game-winner.
Both teams did well to limit the other team's offensive attack, but the unlucky bounce in extra time ended the Ravens season.
The first half was a defensive battle. Typically, the Ravens are able to create more offensive pressure and scoring opportunities than their opponents, but Grace had two more shots and had four corner kicks in the opening half, while the Ravens didn't have any corner kicks.
The Lancers held a defender back at all times, taking away the Ravens ability to send through balls forward from midfield. The Ravens Sydney Routh was able to get the ball down the right side a couple times, but both of her crosses to the middle found only Lancers defenders.
Ashley Rehagen recorded three saves in the first 45 minutes to preserve the scoreless tie at halftime.
Each team's offense found some room to run in the beginning of the second half, though neither squad could find a goal in the second half. The Ravens controlled possession in the early portion of the second half, but the Lancers put pressure on to end the half. Berry, in goal in the second half for the Ravens, made five saves to help send the game to the golden-goal extra time period.
Berry made a tough save early in the extra time period to finish with six saves in the game. For the Lancers, Bethany Blackwood picked up six saves in the win.
Nicole Kelly, Hannah Schmit, Emily Ambuul, Isabelle Wilhelm, Natalie Duque, and Routh all had one shot on goal for the Ravens.
The Ravens finish the season with a 16-6-0 record. Grace advances to Orange Beach, Alabama, for the remainder of the National Championship with a 16-4-2 record.
