A 25-3 run helped Women's Basketball pick up a conference win at home Saturday afternoon. The (RV) Ravens defeated the Culver-Stockton College Wildcats 77-62 despite trailing in the fourth quarter.
Down 5 in the final frame, the Ravens came out on fire after a timeout. Two steals led to two buckets in the paint, then Anna Sanjuan hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Ravens up 62-57 with 4 minutes left to play. It turned out to be a knockout punch as the Ravens limited the Wildcats to just 5 points the rest of the game.
LaRanda Thomas led all scorers with 23 points while Sanjuan added 15 points, Kayla Staley had 12 and Skylar Washington chipped in 10 points. Jada Summers led the Wildcats with 17 points.
The win improves the Ravens record to 9-2 and 4-2 in Heart of America play.
The Ravens finished with 40 rebounds, 9 more than the Wildcats. They shot 41.5 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from 3-point land in the game. Their 12 3-pointers also set a new single-game team-high for the Ravens, passing the previous mark of 11 which they made in games against Missouri Valley College and Mount Mercy University.
The 3-point shot played a big role in the first half for both teams. The Ravens were a scorching 7-of-11 from behind the arc, good for 63.6 percent. The Wildcats shot 36.4 percent from deep, but the timing of their made baskets helped pull them back close whenever the Ravens started to put some distance on the scoreboard.
The Wildcats also pulled down 18 boards in the first half, two more than the Ravens. The Ravens entered the contest averaging 46 rebounds per game, the second-best mark in the Heart of America Conference.
Thomas had 11 points at the break while Sanjuan chipped in 8 points in the opening 20 minutes. The Wildcats were led by Summers and Payton Curley, each with 10 points in the first half.
The Ravens struggled in the third quarter, letting their 5-point halftime lead turn into a 2-point deficit heading into the final quarter. The outside shooting cooled off in the third quarter as the Ravens converted just 2-10 attempts. The Wildcats did damage on the offensive end by getting to the free-throw line, making 8-12 from the charity stripe to help the visitors take the lead.
Next up for the Ravens is a 12 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 home game against (21) Clarke University.
