Baseball sweeps Southwestern College in season-opening doubleheader

WINFIELD – The 2019 season got started with a bang on Sunday for the Raven Baseball team and first-year head coach Eric Peterson as they traveled to Southwestern College.

Benedictine (2-0) scored 33 runs off 27 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep over Southwestern (2-4) taking game one 30-7 and game two 3-2.

In the opener, the Ravens scored nine runs over the first three innings and never looked back as they finished with a 23-run win off 22 hits.

Michael Slaten went 4 for 5 at the plate with two home runs a double and six RBIs as Benedictine finished the game with 12 extra base hits. Logan Finley, Nathan Huber and Daryl Myers recorded two doubles each while Andrew Richards and Jacob Pavlyak added a double each. Richards and Danny Favazza added four RBIs each with Favazza recording a triple.

Michael Kruse earned the start on the hill for the Ravens. He went the first three innings, pitching into the fourth before he was relieved by Ben Costello and Jacob Slaten. Costello was credited with the win while Jacob Slaten earned a save.

In game two, the two teams combined for 11 hits and five runs as the pitchers had the upper hand.

Kam Miller threw the first four and one-third for the Ravens to earn the win as he finished with six strikeouts while giving up two runs off four hits. Luke Caruthers and Ben Hankammer finished off the game with Hankammer recording the final out to earn the save.

Michael Slaten was the only Raven to record a multi-hit game at the plate in the night cap as he went 2 for 3 with a double. Only one of the Ravens three runs were earned as Richards recorded an RBI.

The Ravens remain on the road Tuesday, traveling to Wichita to take on Friends University. The Falcons now play their home games at the Westurban, which is located on the northeast corner of 13th Street North and Ridge Road. at 6900 W. 13th Street
