The Raven Baseball team wrapped up their home schedule on Tuesday in walk-off fashion as they took down Friends University 4-3 on Laughlin Field at Olsen Stadium.
Reigning Heart Player of the Week drove in courtesy runner Matt Piontek with a walk-off double in the bottom of the 10th inning to finish the season with a 16-2 mark at home.
Benedictine (25-8), who finishes up the regular season Saturday in Canton, Mo., against Culver-Stockton College, used the non-conference meeting with Friends (18-29) as an opportunity to continue to get their pitching staff work. The Ravens sent eight pitchers to the hill with Jacob Slaten throwing the final two and one-third innings to earn the win.
The Ravens jumped out to a 2-0 lead scoring a run in the second and third inning before the Falcons scored three in the fifth off Issac Rudolph to take the lead. Benedictine answered with a solo home run off the bat of Andrew Richards in the seventh to tie the game up and then the two teams combined to go scoreless over the eighth and ninth to set up the Ravens walk-off opportunity.
The Ravens recorded eight hits on the plate. Hunter Ostertag went 2 for 3 with a triple and double while Michael Slaten went 2 for 4 with a triple. Jacob Pavlyak added a double to round out the Ravens offensive efforts against the Falcons.
Benedictine takes on Culver-Stockton at 1 p.m. for their final Heart cross divisional doubleheader of the regular season. The Heart Baseball Championship Series starts on Wednesday, May 1 with two play-in games before the entire tournament field gets into the action on May 2 from US Baseball Park in Ozark, Mo.
