(18) Grandview sweeps Heart cross-divisional doubleheader from Softball

The Raven Softball team launched a late-inning rally in game one on Thursday against No. 18 Grandview University but the Vikings were able to hold them off en route to a sweep of the Heart cross-divisional doubleheader.

Benedictine (23-23, 15-15 Heart) dropped the two games 8-5 and 8-1 to the NAIA-ranked Vikings.

In the opener, the Vikings scored three runs in the third inning to put some distance between themselves and the Ravens.

Brianna Hoffman earned the start inside the circle and went the distance for the Ravens. She finished with five strikeouts while allowing eight runs off 14 hits in the loss.

Trailing 6-1, the Ravens plated home three runs in the sixth inning to close their deficit to two runs only to have the Vikings answer with two runs in the seventh.

Sarah Methvin and Molly Chevalier recorded a double each. Blair Shanks went 3 for 4 while Tiffani Ray finished with two RBI.

In game two, the Vikings took advantage of two errors on the Ravens defense to score four runs in the top of the first. Benedictine couldn't climb out of their early deficit as they were limited to five hits at the plate.

Alex Gilham suffered the loss throwing the first two innings. She gave up one earned run off four hits before she was relieved by Erin Ziebarth and Alicia Armijo.

At the plate, Shanks and Megan Medhus each finished with a double. The double by Shanks moved her into a tie for the program's single-season doubles record at 21. She finished with two hits and a RBI as Medhus scored the Ravens lone run.

The Ravens hit the road today for a doubleheader at Peru State College before returning to the Asher Sports Complex on Saturday to wrap up the regular season against Graceland for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Saturday the program will celebrate Senior Day with the ceremony taking place between games.
