OLATHE – The Raven Volleyball team opened up their season on Friday and Saturday with a 3-1 mark at a four-match invite hosted by MNU.
The Ravens dropped their opener to Taylor (Ind.) Univesity 3-2 before rallying for three straight wins over Presentation (S.D.) College 3-1 and a pair of sweeps over Hannibal-LaGrange and Fisk (Tenn.)
Against Taylor, the Ravens won the second and fourth sets to force a fifth set where Taylor won 15-7 to seal the win.
As a team, the Ravens finished with a .188 attack percentage as three players finished in double figures in attacks. Fleur Wesselink led the attack with 13, followed by Elizabeth Nobert with 12 and Donetta Cage with 11. The Ravens finished with 42 assists as Taea Kapels recorded 20 with Paxton Throne adding 18. Defensively, Taylor Shroll anchored the backline with 14 digs while Wesselink and Nobert finished with three block assists each.
In the four-set win over Presentation, the Ravens split the first two sets for taking the match with wins over 25-19 and 25-22.
As a team, the Ravens finished with a .240 attack percentage as three Ravens finished in double figures with kills. Wesselink finished with 17 kills while Cage added 14. Nobert finished with 10 kills to round out the attack. Throne anchored the attack with 42 of the Ravens 46 assists. Defensively, three Ravens were in double figures in digs. Hannah Thomazin led the way with 14 followed by Throne with 13 and Shroll with 11. Nobert anchored the front-line defense with one solo block and two block assists.
In the sweep over Hannibal-LaGrange, the Ravens finished with a .443 attack percentage. Wesselink led the attack with 13 kills while Cage rounded out the Ravens in double figures with 11. Throne finished with 38 of the Ravens 44 assists as Kapels added four. Shroll led the backline defense with 11 digs while Kate Hanson finished with three block assists and one solo block.
In the sweep over Fisk, the Ravens finished with a .202 attack percentage. Wesselink was the only Raven in double figures on the attack as she finished with 14 kills. Throne recorded 29 of the Ravens 37 assists with Emily Dalton and Thomazin added four and three respectively. Thomazin led the backline defense with 11 digs while Wesselink and Nobert added four and three block assists.
The Ravens remain on the road Wednesday as they travel to Fulton, Mo., for a 7 p.m. match with William Woods University.
