Volleyball returns to the road with upset over (RV) Evangel

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– The Raven Volleyball team returned the court on Tuesday as they took on (RV) Evangel University in their fourth Heart of America Athletic Conference match of the season.

Benedictine (7-11, 2-2 Heart) earned a 3-2 win over the Crusaders picking up a 15-10 win in the fifth set after Evangel (14-3, 2-1 Heart) avoided the loss with a win in set four.

The Ravens limited their errors en route to the upset over the Crusaders. They finished with just two receptions errors, three blocking errors and only 10 attacking errors as they finished with a .278 attacking percentage – their highest team attack percentage in conference play and second overall on the season.

Donetta Cage led the attack, finishing with 13 kills off 22 attempts. Fleur Wesselink added 10 kills while Elizabeth Nobert and Sydney Widenmann added eight and seven kills respectively.

The offensive attack was anchored by Paxton Throne. Throne finished the match with 40 of the teams 41 assists. It was the third time this season Throne reached 40 or more assists.

Defensively, the Ravens recorded 51 digs with three players in double figures. Taylor Shroll led the way with 12 while Throne and Maria Duran finished with 10 each. At the net, the Ravens finished with 10 team blocks as Nobert finished with a season-high six block assists to go along with two solo blocks. Wiedenmann and Wesselink combined for five block assists.

The win pushes the Ravens back to .500 in Heart play, which continues at Noon Saturday as the Ravens kick off Family Weekend against Culver-Stockton back inside the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.
