Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

(RV) MNU hands Women's Basketball first conference loss of the season

A tough shooting night meant trouble for Women's Basketball Tuesday at home in the Ralph Nolan Gym.

The Ravens lost to the (RV) MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers 64-52, snapping a four-game win streak for the Ravens.

The Ravens found themselves down by 7 after three quarters, 50-43, but the Pioneers turned their lead into double-digits quickly in the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to open the period. Other than a brief moment following a Skylar Washington bucket, the Ravens trailed by at least 10 points the remainder of the game.

The Ravens couldn't find the range on the offensive end, shooting 18.5% from the field in the second half and 27.9% in the game. They were just 2-of-18 from 3-point range.

Those struggles may have been caused by MNU's length on the inside. The Pioneers entered the game averaging 9.7 blocks per game – the best mark in the NAIA. They picked up 8 more blocks Tuesday, disrupting the Ravens shooting inside.

The Ravens were able to outrebound the Pioneers 45-39, but unfortunately for the home squad, it didn't make enough of an impact on the scoreboard.

The Pioneers got off to a hot start Tuesday, shooting 64.3% from the floor in the opening quarter. MNU hit three-straight 3-pointers in the opening frame to help them take a 21-7 lead midway through the quarter and a 24-13 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.

The Ravens defense clamped down on the Pioneers in the second quarter, limiting the visitors to 9 points while trimming the deficit to 4 points, 33-29.

Nine different Ravens scored in the first half, with Ali Brzozowski and Brynn Maul sharing the team-lead at 5 points, each. They shot 35.3% from the field in the first 20 minutes, grabbing 10 offensive rebounds that turned into 9 second-chance points.

The Ravens finished the contest with 9 more offensive rebounds in the second half but turned those into just 4 more points. Washington led the team with 8 points, Brzozowski and Natalie Smaron had 7 points, and Brzozowski led the team with 10 rebounds.

After dropping their season-opener to Morningside College, MNU (3-1, 3-0 Heart) has picked up impressive wins against (13) Clarke University, (17) Central Methodist College, and, on Tuesday, against the Ravens.

The loss gives the Ravens (5-3, 3-1) their first conference blemish. They will look to rebound with a tough road contest Saturday, Nov. 28 at CMU.
