Men's Basketball earns come-from-behind win over Central Methodist

FAYETTE, Mo. – The Raven Men's Basketball team overcame as much as a 17-point deficit on Saturday as they earned a comeback win over Central Methodist University, 71-66.

Benedictine trailed 39-22 with 4:41 left to play in the first half and went to outscore the Eagles 49-27 over the remaining 26 minutes to earn their fourth straight.

Central Methodist took an early lead over Benedictine as it took the Ravens over three minutes to get their first basket of the game. Back-to-back baskets from Saxton Thuston over an 18-second span allowed the Ravens to erase their early deficit and take a 9-8 lead with over 15 minutes left to play in the first half. CMU countered by outscoring Benedictine 27-9 over the next eight minutes to push their advantage to 17 points.

While Benedictine was able to close down their deficit, CMU took a 43-33 lead into halftime.

The Eagles scored their first four points of the second half from the free throw line to keep their lead in double figures before Benedictine went on a 12-2 run to cut their deficit down to two points just five minutes into the second half.

Thuston gave the Ravens their second lead of the game with just over halfway through the half and after the game played to its second tie, the Ravens went on a 10-0 run to pull ahead by as much as 10 points before CMU came back to tie the game at 66 points with just under two minutes remaining. A 3-pointer from Jaiden Bristol pushed the Ravens back in front and a pair of free throws from Thuston with 13 seconds remaining iced the game for the Ravens.

Thuston finished the game with a career-high 22 points while also recording his first double-double of the season with a game-high 11 rebounds. Chris Jackson added 17 points while Bristol finished with 13 points. The Ravens connected on 56.0 percent from the floor in the second half while holding the Eagles to just 27.6 percent.

Benedictine is scheduled to return home this week to close out 2020 with two straight on Dugan Jones Court. They host Heart newcomer (RV) Park University at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday before hosting Evangel University at 4 p.m. Saturday.
