WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – In a battle of two programs tied for No. 2 in the NAIA, the University of the Cumberlands Patriots made a five-goal halftime lead stand as they earned a 16-11 win over the Raven Women's Lacrosse team.
Benedictine (4-2) had three goals waved off in the first half on two illegal follow-throughs ad a third waved off as the Ravens were ruled to be offside.
Kacey Moore and Natalie Wechter combined to score goals for the Ravens to cut their halftime deficit to three goals, 9-6, inside the first five minutes of the half. Wechter and Aiden McEnerney scored back-to-back goals to pull the Ravens within two, 11-9, midway through the second half but that was all the closer the Ravens would get as the Patriots were able to hold off the Ravens in the second half.
Benedictine finished with a 36-34 advantage in shots while they also held a 17-15 advantage in ground balls. While they finished the first half 13 of 15 on clears, in the second half, they only converted 9 of 13 in the second half. The Ravens also were not able to take full advantage of free-position shots. After going 0 for 4 in the first half, they did go 3 for 5 in the second half.
Wechter finished the game with four goals and three assists to lead the Ravens offensively. Molly Muehlebach and Moore scored two each while Anne Marie Mannella, Aiden McEnerney and Clare Ryan scored one goal each. Ryan finished with two assists with Muehlebach and Manella adding one each.
Taryn St. Louis finished with the game with 10 saves in goal as she suffered the loss. Muehlebach anchored the Ravens defensive pressure with four caused turnovers and the Ravens forced the Patriots into 15 turnovers.
After playing their first six games away from campus this season, the Ravens will make their home debut on March 16 at 5 p.m. as they host NCAA Div. II Fort Lewis College.
