FAYETTE, Mo. – The Raven Women's Basketball team took on (8) Central Methodist University for the second time in five days on Wednesday night in the Quarterfinals of the 2020 Heart Women's Basketball Postseason Tournament.
Benedictine (17-14) pushed the tournament's top seed for four quarters but just couldn't break through against the Eagles in a 68-59 loss.
Central Methodist entered the postseason averaging over 86 points per game. Heading into the third meeting of the season against Benedictine, the Eagles had only scored below 70 points three times. Including Wednesday's meeting, the Ravens are now responsible for limiting the Eagles to under 70 points in two of the four occasions.
After jumping out to a 14-2 lead over the Ravens, the Eagles went cold as Benedictine heated up to close out the first quarter outscoring CMU 13-6 to trail 22-15 headed into the second quarter. CMU again pushed their lead to double figures midway through the second quarter, only to go cold again and allow the Raven back in the game. After trailing by 12 points, the Ravens closed the second quarter outscoring the Eagles 13-9 to send the game into the half with CMU leading 39-31.
Benedictine outscored CMU 15-14 in the third quarter to close within seven points heading into the fourth quarter where the Eagles were able to push their lead back up to their largest of the game at 14 earning the nine-point win.
Four Ravens finished the game in double figures, led b the double-double of Kayla Staley. She finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. LaRanda Thomas matched Staley with 12 points while Rachael Baumgartner added 11 with Natalie Smaron scored 11 off the bench. Benedictine finished with a 42-32 advantage in the paint.
