OLATHE – The third meeting of the season between the Raven Men's Basketball team and (RV) MNU needed overtime to decide the final outcome In the Quarterfinals of the 2020 Heart Postseason Tournament.
The Pioneers closed out the second half on a 7-0 run to force overtime and then outscored the Ravens 8-3 to earn a 79-74 win over Benedictine.
Matt Austin gave the Ravens their first lead of the night with a 3-pointer four minutes into the game that sparked Benedictine to a four-point advantage before MNU battled back to regain the lead four minutes later. Back-to-back baskets from Jaiden Bristol and Jayden Temme erased the Pioneers lead and sparked a run that pushed Benedictine to an 11-point lead, 39-28, heading into the half.
MNU opened the second half on an 11-0 run that erased Benedictine's halftime lead and pulled the game into its second tie five minutes into the half. After playing to the games third tie, back-to-back baskets from Colby Nickels and Eric Krus sparked another Benedictine run that pushed the Ravens in front by 11 with nine minutes left to play.
Temme scored the Ravens final basket of the second half with 1:24 left to play. A free throw by Bristol with one minute remaining was the Ravens final points of the second half as the Pioneers closed out the game on their run to force overtime.
Krus and Nysir Scott combined to score the first three points for the Ravens of the overtime period and that ended up being the only points of the overtime as MNU outscored Benedictine by five in the period to earn the win.
The Pioneers advance to take on top-seeded and NAIA Div. I No. 5 William Penn University on Saturday while the Ravens finish their season at 17-14.
Temme finished with 16 points to lead three Ravens in double figures. Bristol finished with a double-double, scoring 13 and pulling in 11 rebounds while Tyson Cathy added 12. The Ravens finished with a 16-7 advantage off the bench while they outscored the Pioneers 56-40 in the paint. The 56 points set a new single-game high in scoring in the paint for the Ravens.
