Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball snaps five-game series losing streak to CMU

Women's Basketball earned a big win at home Saturday, beating the Central Methodist University Eagles 81-62.

The victory snaps a five-game losing streak to the Eagles.

After taking a 21-point lead at halftime, the Ravens pushed that lead to 25 points in the third quarter. The Eagles amped up the defensive pressure, forcing 10 turnovers in the third quarter – several coming in the final two minutes. The Eagles were able to cut 8 points off that deficit and the Ravens took a 58-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Ravens answered the CMU run, though, pushing their lead back to 25 points four minutes into the fourth quarter. The Ravens got to work inside as Ali Brzozowski, Natalie Smaron and Twilah Carrasquillo got baskets in the paint. The home squad worked the clock and closed out the game for a 19-point win.

A quick start powered the Ravens to a 16-10 lead after one quarter of play. Skylar Washington hit a pair of 3-pointers while Brynn Maul and Smaron each added 4 points in the first period to help the Ravens take the lead.

That lead ballooned to 45-24 by halftime as the Ravens attacked CMU offensively and defensively. Washington continued her strong offensive performance by knocking down two more 3-pointers and cutting to the basket for layups. She had 17 points in the first half to lead the Ravens, finishing the game with 21 points to match her career-high.

The Ravens were very efficient on the offensive end, shooting 49.2% from the field and 56.3% from deep – the best outside shooting of the season for the Ravens.

The defense was just as strong, holding the Eagles to 34.4% shooting. CMU was 3-for-15 from 3-point range.

Rebounding was a factor in the Ravens favor, as well. They pulled down 20 more boards than the Eagles – CMU out-rebounded the Ravens by 14 when the Eagles defeated the Ravens in the teams' first contest this season.

Adding to Washington's total, Brzozowski had 13 points and 11 rebounds, Smaron had 10 points, Maul scored 9 and Carrasquillo added 8 points. Sharing the ball well, the Ravens assisted on 20 of their 30 made baskets.

Riding a four-game win streak, the Ravens (9-4, 7-2 Heart) will hit the road for their next three games. They'll play at Evangel University on Wednesday, Jan. 13.
