Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

(RV) Women's Basketball earns wire-to-wire win over Graceland University

Women's Basketball took control from the opening tip at home Thursday night as they hosted Graceland University in Heart cross-divisional play.

The (RV) Ravens scored 22 points in the first quarter en route to a 61-49 win.

Natalie Smaron helped kick-start the Ravens in the first quarter. The senior post player scored 8 points in the opening 10 minutes as the Ravens took a 22-13 lead.

In the quarter, the Ravens shot 10-of-19 from the floor, good for 52.6%. The Ravens also forced six GU turnovers in the first quarter.

The Ravens started the second quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 34-15 lead. That run helped the Ravens double-up the Yellowjackets at halftime, 42-21. Smaron had 16 at the break to lead the way, with Alleigh Kramer adding 7 points and Sam Brennan scoring 6 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Turnovers played a big role in the first half as the home squad forced 12 GU turnovers and turned it into 14 points. The Ravens also got 22 points in the paint in the first half.

The Ravens continued to control the game in the second half, holding a 56-34 lead after the third quarter. The defense forced six more Yellowjacket turnovers and, on the offensive end, continued to get the ball in the paint for close looks at the basket.

That lead was enough as the Ravens cruised through the final minutes, allowing reserve players to get quality minutes on the floor. The Ravens only scored 5 points in the fourth quarter but walked away with the 12-point win.

Smaron was scoreless in the second half, but her 16 points remained the team-high for the night. Brennan and Skylar Washington each scored 9 points. Smaron's eight rebounds were also a team-high, as were her four assists. For the game, the Ravens shot 39.7% from the field. They forced 23 Graceland turnovers. The home side finished the game with 34 points in the paint and the Ravens grabbed 13 offensive rebounds.

Next up for the Ravens (15-7, 13-5 Heart) is the regular-season finale at noon Saturday, Feb. 13 against Mount Mercy University at home in the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.
