Softball earns Saturday sweep over Briar Cliff University

The Raven Softball team bounced back from a season-opening sweep earlier in the week with a sweep of their own on Saturday.

Playing their second straight series on Ravens Field inside the Asher Sports Complex, Benedictine took a pair of games from Briar Cliff University by finals of 3-2 in both ends of the doubleheader.

Benedictine rallied behind a pair of solid pitching performances inside the circle. Alex Gilham picked up a complete-game win in the opener while Abby Pressgrove followed that up with an extra-inning complete game of her own in game two. Gilham finished with three strikeouts while giving up one earned run off seven hits en route to her win. Pressgrove finished with six strikeouts while giving up two runs off five hits over eight innings to cap off the sweep.

In the opener, the game went scoreless into the fourth inning. Briar Cliff scored a run in their half of the inning before Benedictine rallied to score two in their half. Each team tacked on another run each in the sixth which allowed the Ravens to earn the 3-2 win. Megan Medhus went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a double while Molly Chevalier added a double of her own with two runs scored.

In game two, a two-run home run in the sixth put Briar Cliff in the lead only to have Benedictine rally to tie it with a run in their half. After a scoreless seventh, Natalie Sheffield grounded out to second base to drive in the winning run with the bases loaded in the eighth to give the Ravens the sweep. Medhus and Clare Heitz added an RBI each while Heitz recorded a triple.

Benedictine remains at home on Sunday, hosting another non-conference doubleheader at Noon with former Heart opponent Avila University.
