Jordan Williams gives Baseball sweep over Dordt University with walkoff home run

After winning game one of their doubleheader with Dordt University by 11 runs on Friday, the Raven Baseball team needed a walk-off to win the nightcap.

Jordan Williams broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game against the Defenders to give Benedictine a 2-1 win and the sweep over Dordt after taking game one by the final of 14-3.

Runs and hits were at a premium in the second game as the two teams combined for just six hits after belting out a total of 28 in the opener.

Nick Yeager, who gave up two hits over an inning and a third of work in relief for the Defenders, was able to retire the first batter of the seventh before Williams took him deep on a 1-0 count down the left-field line.

In game one, the Ravens sent out Isaac Rudolph for the start on the hill. He was the first of five pitchers to take the mound throughout the game and went three and two-thirds to earn the win. He finished with five strikeouts before giving way to a combination of Tate Garcia, Hunter Ostertag, Blake Patterson, and Mason Carr. The quartet gave up one run off four hits to keep the Defenders in check at the plate.

The Ravens scored their 14 runs off 20 hits, seven of which were doubles. Daryl Myers went 5 for 5 with two doubles, three runs, and two RBI. Michael Slaten, Jacob Pavlyak, and Danny Favazza added three hits each. Pavlyak recorded a double and three RBI while the remaining doubles came from Jackson Doherty, Brandon Van Beceleare, and Slaten. Favazza, Drew Piontek, and Slaten finished with two RBI each to round out the Ravens offensive effort in game one.

Game two featured five pitchers as the Ravens used three. Luke Caruthers got the start and threw the first three and two-thirds giving up one unearned run off two hits. Matt Piontek threw the next two and one-third innings holding the Defenders to just one hit before Slaten threw a scoreless seventh.

All three of the Raven hits were for extra bases as Drew Piontek and Pavlyak added doubles to go with the home run by Williams. Slaten earned the win after pitching the seventh while Yeager suffered the loss in relief of Isaac VanderHart who limited the Ravens to just one run off one hit over five innings.

The Ravens are scheduled to host a single, nine-inning game against Ottawa Univesity on Feb. 9, but the temperatures forecasted to remain below freezing the game will likely be postponed meaning the next action scheduled for the Ravens will be on the road Feb. 12-13 as they travel to Point Lookout, Mo., four a four-game series with College of the Ozarks.
