NEW ORLEANS – The first appearance in the NAIA postseason for (RV) Raven Baseball since 2007 ended in a 5-2 loss on Monday.
Ottawa (Kan.) University took advantage of one error by Benedictine to score two unearned runs en route to the three-run win in game one of the NAIA Opening Round - New Orleans Bracket.
Michael Slaten earned the start on the hill for the Ravens. He threw the first seven innings, striking out 14 but giving up two runs off four hits. The 14 strikeouts are the most in a single game for the Ravens since April of 2008 when Jason Ermers recorded 15 in an 8-1 win over MNU on April 14.
Ottawa followed up a two-run seventh with a three-run eighth to pull ahead of the Ravens. Benedictine scored their runs in the fifth and eighth innings. Danny Favazza drove in Daryl Myers to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead in the fifth and then Jackson Doherty drove in Jacob Pavlyak in the eighth.
Myers, Favazza, and Pavlyak all finished with two hits each. Myers recorded his 22nd double of the season and Pavlak recorded his second triple of the year as the Ravens were limited to just two extra-base hits out of their six total hits.
Weather permitting, Benedictine will face off against (20) Oklahoma City University today at 3 p.m. in an Elimination Game. Oklahoma City fell 8-0 to Kaiser (Fla.) in game two of the bracket. The winner advances to a second game later today against the loser of the Loyola-Kaiser game which was scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
