Baseball lost a pitcher's duel in the Heart Baseball Championship Series Friday.
The Ravens lost 2-1 to the Central Methodist University Eagles in the championship bracket semifinals.
Neither team found much offense in the game, as both the Ravens and Eagles each tallied four hits. The Ravens relied on starting pitcher Michael Slaten, who went 6.1 innings and gave up both Eagles runs, though only 1 was earned. He struck out four batters. Hunter Ostertag pitched the final 1.2 innings, including getting out of a jam in the seventh inning by forcing a double play.
Mason Schwellenbach got the start on the bump for the Eagles and turned in a gem. He went 7 innings, struck out eight Ravens and the only run he gave up was unearned. Beau Atkins earned the save for CMU by pitching the final 2 innings.
CMU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Deshawn Cole scored on a wild pitch.
The Ravens answered in the fourth inning, capitalizing on an error that allowed Danny Favazza to reach. Favazza scored from first on Jackson Doherty's double down the left field line.
The Eagles scored the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh to chase Slaten out of the game. With two runners on, Ostertag forced a chopper up the middle and Daryl Myers snagged it, touched second, and then threw out the runner at first to end the inning.
Joining Doherty with hits for the Ravens were Slaten, Jordan Williams, and Jack Harpole.
The Ravens now move to the consolation bracket and will play William Penn at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The winner of that game will play the final game on Saturday, with the loser being sent home.
The top-seeded Eagles (41-5) advance to the championship bracket finals to take on MidAmerica Nazarene University at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
