Men's Basketball lost a heartbreaker at Tuesday night as their comeback attempt fell just short.
The Ravens lost to the Graceland University Yellowjackets 61-59.
The game was tight from start to the final seconds. A Tyson Cathy basket with 3:13 to play gave the Ravens a 53-52 lead, but the Yellowjackets answered with 7-straight points to take a 6-point lead. The Ravens fought back, though.
Braden Belt hit a jumper to pull the Ravens to within 4 points with 38 seconds to play, then after Graceland missed a pair of free throws, Preston Reynolds scored to cut the Yellowjackets lead to 59-57. Graceland made a pair of free throws to push its lead back to 61-57, but Sam Ungashick scored with 14 seconds to play to cut the Ravens deficit to 2 points. After two-straight GU inbounds passes were knocked away by Ahmad Louis, he was able to get a steal and found a cutting Brycen LaRue. The freshman's shot attempt was swatted out of bounds, though. The Ravens were unable to get a bucket on the ensuing possession, ending the game with Graceland on top.
The first half was as tight as the second half. Graceland held a 13-11 lead early but Reynolds was the Ravens answer, scoring 6 points in the first 6 minutes including a two-handed dunk.
Later in the first half, Ungashick put together a personal 8-point run to give the Ravens a 29-25 lead with 3 minutes to play before half. In that sequence, the Ravens had a possession that saw Ungashick miss two 3-pointers but offensive rebounds gave the freshman a third try from deep, which was perfect. After a drive into the lane for 2 points, Ungashick hit another 3-pointer.
The Ravens took a 31-29 lead into the halftime break, but it was Graceland that would finish the game with a 2-point win.
Ungashick finished with a game-high 25 points and added 8 rebounds. Reynolds scored 11 and had 9 rebounds.
The Ravens (3-7, 1-3 Heart) will try to bounce back with another home game on Saturday as they take on Culver-Stockton College at 2 p.m.
