Baseball opens up Heart play with series sweep over Culver-Stockton College

Baseball opened up conference play on Sunday and Monday against Culver-Stockton College and erupted for 50 runs off 56 hits as they earned a four-game sweep over the Wildcats. 

Sunday, the Ravens earned wins of 11-9 and 14-7 to sweep the first doubleheader. They followed that up with wins of 13-6 and 12-11 on Monday to sweep the second doubleheader and open up Heart play with four straight wins.

Game 1: Benedictine 11, Culver-Stockton 9
Danny Favazza connected on a walk-off two-run home run in the series opener for the Ravens to push them to a game one win. After the Wildcats scored five runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 9-9, Favazza hit a one-out 2-run home run to drive in Ian O'Malley.

Issac Rudolph finished off the game on the hill for the Ravens, recording all three outs after the Wildcats scored their runs in the seventh to earn the win. O'Malley started the game on the hill, throwing six innings with six strikeouts.

Jacob Slaten and Drew Piontek each connected on home runs while Favazza added a triple with Slaten recording a double as well. Slaten finished with four RBI while Favazza added three.

Game 2: Benedictine 14, Culver-Stockton 7
The Ravens rattled off 14 unanswered runs over the first three innings in support of Andrew Baier on the hill en route to their second win of the series.

At the plate, the Ravens recorded a series-high 19 hits in the win. Favazza, Hunter Moffet, and O'Malley finished with three hits each. Piontek finished with a double, triple and led the team with three RBI.

Baier finished with seven strikeouts over four innings, holding the Wildcats to just two earned runs off five hits for the win.

Game 3: Benedictine 13, Culver-Stockton 6
Benedictine started off Monday where they finished Sunday, recording 17 hits at the plate. Eight of those 17 hits were for extra bases as Favazza recorded two home runs with Piontek added a third. O'Malley finished with two doubles while Jacob Pavlyak, Moffet, and Jackson Doherty added a double each. 

Nelson Klein moved to 4-1 on the season throwing the first four innings in the win. He gave up two earned runs off five hits with two strikeouts. Tate Garcia threw the final two innings, entering in the sixth with a two-run lead to earn his first save of the season.

Game 4: Benedictine 12, Culver-Stockton 11
After Culver-Stockton scored three runs in the sixth inning, the Ravens needed their second rally of the game to cap off the win. Jack Harpole drove in two on a single in the bottom of the sixth and later stole second base allowing O'Malley to score and put the Ravens back on top.

Blake Patterson threw the final inning and one-third to earn the win. He held the Wildcats to just one hit with two strikeouts.

Moffet finished with a home run at the plate, while Favazza added another double. O'Malley led the Ravens with four RBI while Favazza and Moffett added two RBI to join Harpole. 

The Ravens hit the road for their second Heart series of the season on Saturday and Sunday with a trip to Marshall, Mo., to take on Missouri Valley College.
