Football shuts out Peru State in second half for 31-7

(RV) Benedictine Football returns to O'Malley Field on Saturday with a bounce-back win over the Peru State College Bobcats in Heart cross-division play.

The Ravens finished the game 4 of 5 on their trips to the red zone (inside the opponent's 20-yard line) en route to a 31-7 win over the Bobcats.

Benedictine used a balanced offensive attack, even after the rain moved in to start the second half of play. They finished with 146 yards on the ground and 237 through the air as they had 383 total yards on 70 plays.

Rayshon Mills got the scoring started for Benedictine with a 1-yard rush midway through the first quarter. The point after from Harry Balke was good and the Ravens pulled in front 7-0. Benedictine's second score of the game came on a pass from  Garrett Kettle connected on a 28-yard pass to JaShawn Todd early in the second quarter. The Bobcats answered 7 minutes later, only to have the Ravens score again before the half ended when Mills scored on a 16-yard touchdown carry.

By halftime, the Ravens had 233 total yards on offense while holding the Bobcats to 89 yards – which included negative yards on the ground

The Ravens held the Bobcats scoreless during the second half as the rain began to move in as field conditions deteriorated. Reed Levi caught an 8-yard pass from Kettle for the only touchdown of the second half with four minutes left in the third quarter before Harry Balke converted on a 28-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Mills finished with 76 yards on 13 carries while Kettle added 237 yards through the air on 14 of 27 passing. Jacob Gathright anchored the Raven receivers with 149 yards on 6 receptions with an average of 24.8 yards per catch.

Defensively, the Ravens finished with 3 sacks and 6 tackles for a loss. Issac Anderson, Tyler Wilson, and Heath Baker combined for the sacks while Gavin Spangler led the defense with 8 total tackles. Anderson finished with a forced fumble while Wilson added two more.

Benedictine returns to the road for their next game, traveling to Dubuque, Iowa, to take on Heart North opponent Clarke University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
