Volleyball runs winning streak to four with non-conference win over USM

Volleyball put together an impressive win in their non-conference finale on Tuesday night.

The Ravens beat the University of Saint Mary Spires 3-0 at home, extending their winning streak to four matches.

The Ravens (8-3, 2-0 Heart) couldn't have asked to get off to a better start, surging to a commanding lead they never gave up in the opening set. The Ravens sprinted out to an 11-1 lead. Then, after the Spires played level for several points to make it 18-9 Ravens, the home team finished off the set on a 7-1 run to win 25-10 and take a 1-0 lead.

While the Ravens showed how dominant they could be in the opening set, they showed their fighting spirit in the second set. The Spires led for a majority of the set, jumping out to a 12-6 lead, but the Ravens fought back. Down 17-13, the Ravens put together a 7-0 run to go up 20-17. Sabrina Oncins's ace gave the Ravens their first lead of the set, 18-17.

The big Ravens run continued as they went on to win the set 25-20, closing things out with a 12-3 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The teams traded points early in the third set, but the Ravens slowly built up a commanding lead. The Spires made a late charge, but the Ravens closed out the third with a 25-19 win, taking the match 3-0.

Oncins had a match-high 14 kills to go along with 6 digs and a block assist. Mary Pat Taylor added 11 kills for the Ravens, plus 5 digs and 2 aces. Marea Wortmann notched 3 aces and had 23 assists, while Marissa Mantz had 21 assists and 2 aces.

The win was the Ravens fourth in a row, snapping Saint Mary's own three-match winning streak. In the Ravens four-match winning streak, they have won 12 of 14 sets played. The Ravens return to Heart of America play for their next tests, road matches at Missouri Valley College on Friday, Sept. 16, and at (15) Central Methodist University on Saturday, Sept. 17.
