(9) Jamestown ends Volleyball's historic run 3-2 in NAIA Opening Round

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – No. 9 University of Jamestown needed five sets to end Benedictine Volleyball's history run on Saturday night.

The Jimmies, the 2022 NAIA National Champion, needed to win two straight against the Ravens after falling behind 2-1 to advance past Benedictine. The Ravens opened with a 25-23 win before the Jimmies tied the match with a 25-11 win. Benedictine won 25-12 in the third set only to have Jamestown win 25-8 and 15-7 to end the Ravens season.

Benedictine used 16 kills to come back and win the first set. Trailing by 6 at 10-4, the Ravens started to chip away on kills from Regan Bruggeman and Hokulani Sagapolu. Maura Lickteig closed the Ravens deficit down to 11-10 with a kill, but the Jimmies managed to remain in the lead. Bruggeman gave the Ravens their first lead at 17-16 with another kill, but the teams traded points until kills from Sagapolu and Sabrina Oncins ended the set.

The Ravens were limited to just 7 kills in the second set, as the Jimmies hit a match-high .600 with 12 kills.

Benedictine dominated the third set, building a 9-0 lead before Jamestown scored its first point of the set. Sagapolu pushed the Ravens to their largest lead of the set, 21-7, with another kill before a ball-handling error by the Jimmies gave the Ravens a 13-point win.

With as dominant as Benedictine was in the third set, Jamestown was equally as dominant in the fourth set. They limited Benedictine to just 4 kills as they connected on 14 while holding the Ravens to single digits. That momentum carried over to the fifth set as the Jimmies jumped out to an 8-2 lead before eventually earning the 6-point win to seal the match win.

Sagapolu finished the match with 15 kills. Bruggeman added 7 while Oncins finished with 6. Amber Allen finished with 19 assists as Haley Cahill added 12.

Defensively, the Ravens finished with 7 team blocks. Maura Lickteig led the front row with 2 solo blocks and 4 block assists. Carolina Zapata added a solo block while Oncins finished with 2 block assists. Evelyn Arreola led the Ravens with 16 digs as five Ravens finished in double figures. Mary Pat Taylor added 13 while Sagapolu, Allen, and Cahill finished with 10 each.

The Ravens finish the season with an overall record of 21-8, qualifying for the NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship for the first time in program history.
