(RV) Men's Lacrosse falls to (9) William Penn in Heart Championship Semifinals

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – Top-seeded and No. 9-ranked William Penn University ended Men's Lacrosse run in the 2023 Heart Men's Lacrosse Championships on Wednesday night in the Semifinals.

After playing to a 4-4 draw after the first quarter, William Penn broke the game open with an 8-goal second quarter en route to a 23-8 win over the Ravens.

After the Statesmen scored the game's first goal, the Ravens rattled off four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Charlee Louree scored the game's first goal for the Ravens off an assist from Mac Postel Jr. that led to goals from Paul Gordon, Joey Calabria, and James Carson to put Benedictine ahead 4-1 midway through the first quarter. Jordan Rodriguez assisted on the goals from Gordon and Carson while Ty Beyer assisted the goal from Calabria. 

William Penn took fire offensively through halftime. The Statesmen rattled off 11 straight goals to take a 12-4 lead into halftime.

Benedictine scored the first two goals of the third quarter on shots from Carson and Gordon but couldn't cut into the Statesmen lead as William Penn matched Benedictine with 3 goals in the third quarter before outscoring the Ravens 8-1 in the fourth.

Carson led the Ravens with 3 goals and 1 assist. Gordon and Louree scored 2 goals each while Calabria scored once. Rodriguez finished with 4 assists while Louree was joined by Mac Postel Jr. with 1.

Defensively, Drew Doran and Carson Huerter finished with 3 caused turnovers each. Jerry Dalrymple suffered the loss in goal, recording 11 saves over 60 minutes. Postel Jr. went 11 of 27 on faceoffs in the loss while the Ravens used Rodriguez, Parker Bostock, and Jack Northrup along with Postel Jr. to handle the faceoffs.

The Heart Championship Game will be hosted by William Penn on Saturday as they will take on No. 2 seed St. Ambrose University. The winner earns the Heart's automatic berth in the 2023 NAIA Men's Lacrosse National Invitational Tournament. The NAIA bracket will be released at 3 p.m. Sunday.
