Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball downs Peru State 3-0

Ravens Volleyball earned a sweep against the Peru State Bobcats Friday night.

The Ravens won the opening match of Family Weekend in straight sets, but it wasn't always easy.

The Ravens grabbed control of the opening set in the early moments, taking a 5-2 lead and then expanding on that to a 10-4 lead. A timeout by the Bobcats slowed the momentum a little, but the Ravens balanced attack led to a 25-14 win in the first set.

Regan Bruggeman, Mary Pat Taylor and Hokulani Sagapolu each recorded 3 kills in the first set, with Amber Allen and Maura Lickteig each adding 2 kills.

The second set wasn't nearly as easy for the Ravens as the Bobcats took a 16-10 lead. The Ravens chipped into that lead to make it 15-14 in favor of Peru State, but the Bobcats answered with another run to make it 20-15. With their backs against the wall, the Ravens answered with a 10-3 run to win the set 25-23 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Bobcats were formidable again in the third set, jumping out to a 13-9 lead on the Ravens. However, the home side rattled off 4-straight points to tie the match, and it remained tight with the score 17-17. That's when the Ravens went on another 4-0 run to take a 21-17 lead and were able to hold off Peru State for the 25-22 set win, and a 3-0 sweep in the match.

The Ravens attack numbers mirrored the results of each set. The Ravens had a .357 attack percentage in the first set, but that dipped to .159 in the second and .132 in the third, finishing .200 overall.

Bruggeman, Taylor and Sagapolu all finished with 8 kills. Lickteig and Carolina Zapata had 6 kills each. Allen finished with 29 assists and 7 digs to go with her 2 kills in the first set. Taylor added 2 aces and 13 digs, and Sagapolu also had 2 aces to go with 14 digs.

With the win, the Ravens improve to 12-3 on the season and 4-1 in Heart Conference play. They'll close out their Family Weekend schedule at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 against Graceland University.
