Volleyball continues road swing with 3-2 win over University of St. Mary

LEAVENWORTH – Volleyball continued their road swing on Tuesday night, traveling down Highway 73 to take on the University of St. Mary.

The two teams traded wins before Benedictine rallied for a 15-10 win in the fifth set to earn a 3-2 win over the Spires. Benedictine opened with a 25-13 win, then fell 25-21, before taking the third set 25-16. USM won the fourth set 25-16 to force set five.

In the win over the Spires, the Ravens posted their fourth hitting percentage over .225 in 8 matches this season as they finished at .230 with 66 kills – one off their match high for the season. 

Four Ravens finished in double figures in attacks. Hokulani Sagapolu led the attack with 18 kills while also adding 19 digs as she flirted with a 20-20 double-double for the second time this season. Mary Pat Taylor added 16 kills and 17 digs while Regan Bruggeman and Carolina Zapata finished with 14 and 12 kills respectively.

Amber Allen finished the match with 56 assists, setting a new five-set season high, as the Ravens finished with 65 as a team. 

Defensively, in addition to the back row efforts of Sagapolu and Taylor, Evelyn Arreola continued to lead the way in digs for the Ravens. She finished with 32 digs, setting a new single-match high for the season. Allen added 11 digs to round out the back-row defense. The Ravens finished with 10 team blocks, which included 5 solo blocks. Zapata finished with 2 solo blocks and 3 block assists while Bruggeman added 3 block assists. Sagapolu, Kelly DeMeulenaere and Sabrina Oncins added a solo block each while Maura Lickteig finished with 2 block assists. 

Benedictine heads to McPherson on Saturday for a pair of matches against McPherson College and Oklahoma City University. They take on McPherson at Noon and Oklahoma City at 2 p.m.
