OSKALOOSA, Iowa – Benedictine Men's Basketball earned their third straight win on Saturday, earning a 68-60 over William Penn University inside the Penn Gymnasium.
The Ravens opened the game with a jumper from Hagen Hilgendort and a 3-pointer from Braden Belt to set the tone for the first half. Benedictine led the entire half, battling through two ties they never gave up the lead.
After playing to a tie at 11 points, a 3-pointer from Larry Parker III sparked an offensive run that allowed the Ravens to pull ahead by 8 points. Another 3-pointer from Belt with under 5 minutes remaining in the half allowed Benedictine to pull ahead by 13 points.
While the offensive momentum was squarely in the Ravens favor for much of the first half, the Statesmen were finally able to slow down Benedictine and held them scoreless over four minutes down the stretch, allowing them to erase their double-figure deficit. Gino Corridori closed out the first-half scoring to send Benedictine into halftime leading 30-25.
William Penn used the momentum they created to end the first half to start the second half. That led to their first lead of the game inside the first four minutes of the half. The initial lead didn't last long for the Statesmen as a free throw from Ahmad Louis and a 3-pointer from Brycen LaRue quickly gave the Ravens back the lead with 15 minutes remaining.
The Statesmen took back the lead on a jumper a minute later and extended their lead to four points before the Ravens used another run to erase their deficit. Jack Vander Woude sparked the comeback with three 3-pointers over a 2-minute stretch that allowed the Ravens to move back in front by 7 points and the Ravens never looked back as they earned the season split with the Statesmen.
Benedictine finished with 10 3-pointers, hitting 41.7 percent for the game as they hit double digits from beyond the arc for the first time in conference play and since hitting 10 on Nov. 1.
Corridori led four Ravens in double figures with 15 points. Parker III added 12 points while Vander Woude and Belt finished with 11 points each.
Benedictine returns home for two straight next week, hosting Graceland University on Monday at 7:30 p.m. and Missouri Valley College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Monday's game with the Yellowjackets was rescheduled from Jan. 13.
