Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball winning streak snapped by Vikings

Men's Basketball had its winning streak snapped Wednesday night.

The Ravens fell in a hard-fought contest, 73-71, to the Missouri Valley College Vikings. The loss snaps the Ravens four-game winning streak.

The Ravens faced a 7-point deficit coming out of halftime, but battled back to take a 4-point lead just 5 minutes into the second half. The Ravens got 3-pointers from Brycen LaRue, Braden Belt, Jack Vander Woude, and Haggan Hilgendorf during the run.

The Vikings had their own answer, though, using a 7-0 run to go back in front. MVC led by 11 points with 8:12 remaining, but the Ravens charged back with back-to-back 3-pointers by Hilgendorf and LaRue to cut it back to 5 points. The Ravens knocked down 13 3-pointers in the game, a season high, with LaRue making five and Hilgendorf draining four from deep.

Another Hilgendorf basket with 6:09 to play got the Ravens to within 1 point, but that was as close as they'd get the remainder of the game. The Vikings made enough free throws down the stretch to keep the Ravens from completing their comeback.

Free throws played a big part in the game – the Vikings were 21-of-26 from the line while the Ravens were just 8-15.

Hilgendorf finished with 22 points, the most he's scored as a Raven. LaRue was right behind with 21 points, and Belt finished with 10 points.

The Vikings used a late surge to take a 7-point lead into halftime. The Vikings actually led for most of the first half, but a LaRue 4-point play gave the Ravens their first lead. LaRue hit a 3-pointer from the wing, was fouled, and knocked down the free throw to put the Ravens in front 21-20.

After a Vikings basket, Hilgendorf put the Ravens back in front, but MVC closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 30-23 lead into the break. The Ravens run to take the lead early in the second half was then negated by the visitors making a run of their own.

The Ravens (8-13, 7-11 Heart) will hit the road for their next contest, a 4 p.m. tip Saturday, Feb. 3 at Culver-Stockton College.
