Volleyball falls in top-25 matchup

Ravens Volleyball dropped a battle of top-25 teams at home on Tuesday night.

The No. 24 Ravens lost, 3-0, to the No. 21 Central Methodist University Eagles.

The opening set went back-and-forth down to the wire. The Eagles took a 4-point early lead to force a Ravens timeout, but the Ravens answered with an 8-3 run to take an 18-17 lead. CMU answered with a 4-0 run to move in front 21-18 only to see the Ravens get to set point at 24-23. However, it was the visitors who closed out the first set with a 27-25 win to take a 1-0 advantage in the match.

The second set got away from the Ravens as a 10-8 deficit turned into an 18-9 deficit in a hurry. The Ravens showed some grit, battling back to within 4 points at 18-14, but a 6-0 Eagles run closed out the CMU set win at 25-15. The win gave the Eagles a 2-0 advantage in the match.

The Ravens took an early 10-8 lead in the third set, but an 11-4 Eagles run put CMU in the driver's seat. The Ravens again battled back to cut the deficit to 3 points at 20-17, but the Eagles closed out the set – and the match – with a 5-1 run to win 25-18 and 3-0.

The Ravens finished the match with a .158 attack percentage while the Eagles finished at .238. The Ravens had 9 return errors, compared to just 3 for CMU.

Leading the way for the Ravens attack was Mahala Sewell and Hokulani Sagapolu, each with 10 kills. Marissa Mantz had 15 assists and Haley Cahill added 10 assists to go along with an ace. Sagapolu had 12 digs and Cahill had 11.

Next up for the Ravens (19-7, 10-4 Heart) will be a two match road trip as they travel to Graceland on Friday, Nov. 1 and then Peru State on Saturday, Nov. 2.
