Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball takes on William Woods, (7) Georgetown at Remy Williams Memorial Invitational

PARKVILLE, Mo. – Benedictine Men's Basketball dropped a pair of road games on Friday and Saturday as they took part in the annual Remy Williams Memorial Invitational.

Friday, the Ravens fell to William Woods 56-38 before dropping their Saturday game to No. 7 Georgetown (Ky.) 77-65.

Friday afternoon, the Owls turned a 2-point halftime advantage into an 18-point win by holding the Ravens to just 23.1 percent from the floor in the second half while connecting on 50 percent from the floor.

A 3-pointer from Brycen LaRue and a layup from Jack Vander Woude gave the Ravens an early 5-2 lead over the Owls. While that was the Ravens only lead of the first half, the Owls were never able to pull away from the Ravens by more than five points before a jumper by Ezrah Viagafa made it 23-21 headed into halftime.

Benedictine's first basket of the second half was another 3-pointer from LaRue that closed the Ravens with a point, 25-24, inside the first two minutes of the half.

The Owls held the Ravens scoreless for an 8-minute stretch that ended with a 3-pointer from Drew Purdy with just under 9 minutes remaining in the game. The drought allowed the Owls to pull ahead of the Ravens by 20 before the Purdy 3-pointer.

LaRue finished with 12 points to lead the Ravens in scoring while Vander Woude finished with 9. The Ravens finished the game shooting 30.6 from the floor with 5 3-pointers.

Against the Tigers, the Ravens surpassed their total 3-pointers combined over the first two games of the season as they finished with 14 total 3-pointers against Georgetown.

The first half went back and forth as the Ravens used the 3-pointer to keep pace. Purdy connected on a 3-pointer near the midpoint of the first half to put Benedictine ahead 18-16. Seconds later, a 3-pointer from Harrison Kisling pushed Benedictine to a 21-16 before a Vander Woude 3-pointer allowed the Ravens to pull back ahead by four, 24-20.

While the Ravens found their range, the Tigers were able to match Benedictine with baskets of their own to keep within striking distance. Haggan Hilgendorf used another 3-pointer to push Benedictine out to its largest lead of the half, 30-24, with 3:28 remaining in the half. A pair of free throws from Georgetown with 2 seconds remaining gave their halftime lead as they closed out the half outscoring Benedictine 11-2.

Benedictine used a pair of 3-pointers from Bence Duka and Vander Woude to erase their halftime deficit and pull back ahead 38-35 before a second from Vander Woude made it 41-37 Ravens inside the first two minutes of the half.

A four-minute scoring drought from Benedictine allowed Georgetown to overcome the early deficit and gradually pull ahead 54-46 before a pair of free throws from LaRue ended the Ravens scoring drought.

Another 3-pointer from Vander Woude pulled Benedictine back with three points, 54-51, just past the midpoint of the second half before Georgetown was able to pull back ahead by double figures. The Ravens couldn't find a response, which allowed the Tigers to pull ahead for the win.

LaRue paced the Ravens for the third time in three games with a game-high 20 points. Hilgendorf finished with 15 while Vander Woude added 14.

Benedictine makes its debut inside Ralph Nolan Gymnasium on Wednesday, hosting a 7 p.m. game against Haskell Indian Nations University.
